My son and I was out for a drive two weeks ago and got the itch to get on it a little leaving Hooters. Didn't hit it to hard, but enough to almost break the rear tires lose, it all stock. All was well untill I went for another ride a couple days later. The tranny would not shift into 2nd untill I hit aboiut 20 to 25k RPM's. So I parked it checked the fluid, all was well. Checked the fluid it hot and cold, it was OK. The next day I took it back out and it shifted fine and I thought well maybe it was just a one time thing, but it wasn't. Sometimes it shifts smooth and sometimes it takes 20 to 25k RPMs to get it to shift.
I'm not a gear head and don't really have any idea what is going on. So before I take to a shop I was hopeing someone could provide advice. If not, maybe direct me to a good transmission shop in Cincinnati, Ohio.
When you checked the fluid level did you ever do it with the engine running? The transmission fluid level is measured when the engine is running.
No. I did not check while running, but I will now. I was reading in the Shop Manual that you need to drive for at least 15 min to get it warm before checking. So thats what I did, but with it off. I'll check and get back with you.
Durango Boy, I rechecked the fluid while running and hot. It was low and said to add .5 pint of fluid. So I wanted to check the fluid while it was cold and it was well over the hot position on the stick. I would have thought it would have been well below the add position on the stick. Am I reading this correctly? Thanks!

Yes, if you get a normal reading when it's hot but not running then you have an inaccurate reading and will likely be low with it running. See if adding the fluid helped, although have a quart isn't much.
