I used a Flow Kooler water pump and a 160 degree Robertshaw thermostat on my '74 small block. My car has AC and it never goes over 200 degrees even on the days we have temps in the mid 90's. I still have the original radiator and clutch fan.

Do you still have the original style water pump with the small bearing and the small bolt pattern for the fan?

You'll need pump number 1683. It's available from Summit.

The 1683 has a 3/4 shaft.
If he has all the stock pulleys he will probably need the 1668 with the 5/8 shaft and it appears to have both bolt patterns.

I bought a Pro Comp pump.
high volume nicely made, and a good price.
seems to be doing an excellent job of cooling,
with stock cleaned radiator.

several on Ebay..69VEtt

I got boned by Flowkooler and still have one of their pumps new in a box!

Flowkooler pumps are just stock core pumps with a bigger impeller and larger back cover. Their QA sucks as does their return policy.

I use quality aluminum pumps. Race pumps are meant for continuous use over 4000 rpm so stay away from them. I have a stewart Stage III on one motor and a Weiand on the other

Saw a good magazine article a few years ago where they tested all sorts of fans - direct drive and viscous fan clutch. Bottom line? The viscous fan clutch lost less horsepower than the flex and fiberglass style direct drive fans.

The reason I ask is you might want to upgrade to the later model pump with the reinforced webbing around the bearing and the larger bolt pattern for the fan clutch.I did a 69 last year.I bought all the pulleys, water pump and fan clutch for a 78 L82.

How to get boned by FlowKooler.

Summit Racing is 10 minutes from my office. So I buy a Flow kooler pump.

Well it is somebodys old refurbished core return just out of a hot tank with new internals. Well it has casting flash and unpainted. so i clean and polish it up and apply a beautiful coat of metalic blue paint to match my motor. I install it with the greatest of care. Well I start filling my radiator with a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and distilled water and when it fills up to the pump a drip drip drip starts out of the shaft snout. so I think that maybe firing the motor might get that new front seal seated. It only was worse running and under pressure.

So I call up summit who refers me to flowkooler. So they said here is a RMA and we will send you a new one when yours arrives. About a two week turn around. So I said I will send you mine and I will buy another one at summit and then when mine arrives give me the in store credit on my account.

So I buy the second one, polish, paint it, and install it. About three weeks into driving it this one is showing dried green buildup near the weep hole. I'm a little more than miffed. So i drove home from work and here is my returned pump in a box on my door step. So I open it and all it says is return to sender.........................

So i call flowKooler and get some lady on the phone that goes off on me that you can't return painted water pumps. So now I've got two suck *** leaking pumps . So anyway i raise hell with local Summit racing and they give me a new in the box flowkooler pump. So I have three of them now for the price of two.

Well I'll be dammed to waste my time polishing and painting a third one. Would you like to buy it cheap? Still new in the box from 4 years ago. I bought the Stewart pump and never had a problem
