Hello. I recently replaced the points style distributor of my 1970 corvette to an HEI distributor system. I am also in the process of replacing my tach, oil, and temp gauges. My question is with the two wires on the old distributor that was connected to the positive side of the coil.
Does both wires connects to the battery side of the HEI coil?
or
Does the negative wire connects to the "tach" side of the HEI coil
Currently, I have both wires attached to the battery side of the HEI coil.
The horn relay is used as a junction block for half the underhood wiring, so its probably about as good as you're going to get without running directly to the fuse panel.
I believe others have also tapped into the 12v,
going to the wiper motor.
which is switched on/off with the key.
(these wires are right behind the dist)
I don't recall the wire color.... 69VETT
The horn relay is not switched, posters car will never shut off. 69Vette is correct about the existing wires. What you want to do is run a 10 gauge stranded wire from the fuse panel and hook it to the IGN tab, in the fuse panel by way of crimping on a yellow female lug. Look at your fuse panel, you will see 3 male lugs. ACC, IGN and a third, escapes me right now. Hook to the IGN tab. On my '73, there was a rubber plug just above the fuse panel that that when removed, allowed a wire to come out just above the main harness junction in the engine compartment. You can splice another yellow lug to the other end which will plug into the BATT terminal on the HEI, or, you can butt splice a latching end onto the wire, or solder it on, if you can solder. You can also, at the same time, run a 14 gauge wire for the future tach pulse line, and spool it up for later use. C.
