Should I do anything to the new gas tank I am putting onto the frame of my roadster, before installation? Is any type of paint or rustproofing required? Any info is appreciated.
I've installed two new Quanta tanks; one in the 68 and the other in the 70.
First I washed the outside down with lacquer thinner. The tanks are covered in a thin film of wax that acts as lubricant during the pressing process. The tanks are tin plated (I think it's tin). Then I paint them with Eastwoods Tank Tone. It's a metallic zinc paint. I do this to give the outside surface a little extra corrosion protection. As you can see, the original tanks with the same coating as Qaunta's (I think) will corrode after years. So I give'm a little extra protection.
Also, at the rear of the tank, look at the flanges (where the two halves are mated) you can see there's an indentation for the straps. I've found it helps to indent the flange to effective decrease the effective circumfrance of the tank to create extra tolerance for the straps. I use a 2X4 and a hammer to bend them down a little more.
The straps (because they are repro?) seem a little bit short. They may not fit under the top edge of the frame far enough for the strap tightening bolt to fit from under the bottom edge of the frame. (Had no problem with the 68, this problem occurred with the 70) I screwed some 3/4 inch 3/8 bolts in the strap mounting bolt holes and then used a drift to hammer the bolts and force the strap deeper into the frame so that the proper 3/8 bolts could be screwed into the strap mounting holes.
