We have a '77, and did a total restore about 12 years ago. I had the entire thing hollowed out replacing the whole interior, etc. Now we need to replace the speakers from under the dash pad, and I can't seem to recall how to get the upper dash out. I know I had it out during the resto, but so was everything else. I had the screws out from the dash to the L-R dash pieces, but couldn't get the pad to come free..... Am I going to have to remove the instruments and L-R dash pads, as well? Or what?
You do need to remove the rh map pocket because there is one screw kind of hidden under the dash to the right above the bezel. All other screws are visable - remove rh and lh door pillars to make taking out easy - there are at least 5 "sliders" at the window and you just pull the dash out from the right - bend just a little if you have to. Remember the screws at the wiper panel, too. Be sure to wire , at least, the drivers speaker while it is out - rh is easy. While you are there - check lightbulbs, all connections. Hope this helps. PS-left dash panel and center bezel stay in place.
They look like Pioneer 4 X 6 speakers. Do you have or do you remember which model they are? I have my dash pad out now but never thought about the kick pads too. Are you doing both? Thanks for your help.

Yes, all four were done. This pic shows what came out. Sometime in the past someone was too lazy to take the dash pad off. So they just replaced the passenger with a 4-8ohm speaker and left the driver side as the original 10ohm. And the sound was....not so good. Head was a Kenwood 15W x 4.
Now with 50W x 4 (KHE-300 head) the sound is very nice. You don't get deep bass with 4 x 6"s but I am very pleased with the head and speakers. Really makes cruising much more enjoyable.
I also did the pioneer 4 x6 - about $30 for the two and they sound great. The biggest thing in removing the dash is patience - make sure all screws are out before pulling. I did the dash for treble -glass -, the kick panels would be more base - fabric sound absorb. But, I did put two 4 x 6 in the back on the '75 - just got two L brackets screwed to back of interior and bolted speakers on - running wires is easy.
In my '80, I did it from the top. No dash removal needed. I also installed bass blockers to filter out everything down low so I could get volume out of the 4x6 before it started to distort. They don't reproduce low end very well, so I let the rear 6x9's and the sub handle those duties.
Oh Snap! That's a pretty involved process for just changing a couple speakers and a radio!
Nothing is easy on these cars. But once the job is done the mods last a long time and can give great driving pleasure. There is a lot of satisfaction in doing it yourself, despite a bit of blood-letting and bruises.
Wow!!! This is better than I thought it would be! Love the kick pad stuff..... makes me wanna go get a couple of more speakers just to put them in there. .......... thanx for all the pix and tips guys. Car people are the greatest!!!! L8R,
if you go for the dash as opposed to the kick panel be careful not to use a speaker with too big a cone or magnet. Mags hand down and rest on your speedo and make re-install a bear.

Quite true. The speakers shown in my pic are a shallow magnet design.
My original speakers were headed for the dash but now they are headed for the kick pads and I bought new Kenwood speakers for the dash pad. I have a USA 200 Watt stereo that is going in now and it should be able to push both front sets and the 6X9 I have in the rear in my box. Not going for super loud sound, just enough to get the music above the side pipe rumble.
I'll take pictures of the install and let you know how it turns out but thanks again for the pics and tips. Very helpful.
I did manage to pick up the Pioneer Speakers and with a little drilling, grinding and sweating managed to get them in to the brackets for the upper dash on my 77. Here is a picture of them on the pad and the model number of the speakers.
I have to locate four more locking screws before installing (yup, only two per speaker came on the original from the factory, amazing) and then the top pad will follow the left pad back in to the assembly on the car.
Looks pretty good to me. You don't have a basement nut/bolt/screw inventory? Absolutely essential.
Thanks Paul. You raise a good point and I do have that basement nut/bolt/screw/washer/wire/tape/etc inventory; but I'll be darned that I didn't have any of those "cut a thread as you go" type of nuts and the shaft isn't threaded, so I am left hanging for a short time. I know, no excuse really; but hey, it will give me a chance to run to our local Home Depot or Lowes tomorrow and that isn't all bad.
I also have to pick up some hex head bolts for the side pipe system and I need to get some of that high temp pipe release as well, so a few errands tomorrow are in order. I hope the weather is good so I can take the Orange C-3 out for a spin.
