Default Alternator Problems

Well in march of 07 i swapped to a cs130 alt form a 91 vette. I followed Durango Boys paper and everthing has went great until now.
I have been having weird problems of the alt droping volts and the pegging my guage at 18 volts before going back to 13.5-14 volts. It will also flutter from 10-14 then drop and peg out again. I have a ez wiring harness in the car so I do not have the factory idiot light. I have the cs plug wired with the red wire going to the bat termal on the alternator and the brown wire going to the bat termal on my accel hei since it is a switched 12 volt source. Do I need to buy the declo adaper 8078 with the resitor built in to solve this problem or is the alternator just going bad.

Yeah you need a resistor or a bulb inline with the switched brown wire.

Also, have the alternator tested to make sure the voltage regulator is still good. That much fluctuation could have harmed things.

I'm sorry I did not have a disclaimer in the paper about the resistor, I just didn't expect so many custom harnesses without either a light or a resistor.

its cool. the new alt will be here in the morning thank goodness for a warranty. It worked or i guess it worked up until about 2 weeks ago so about a year and half with no resistors not too bad.

well got the new alt on working great. bought a 15ohm 2 watt resistor par painless wirings instructions on their cs harness. I also have a 500ohm 1/4 watt resitor incase i need it. With the 15ohm my autometer sport comp volt gauge said 14 the went to 13 with the electric fans, high beams (hella 90mm race moduels) and hella ff50 driving lights, and the radio with subs all the way up. My only concern is how hot the alt case gets. I have a lager fan than what came on the cs130 but its not much lager. So any help is appriciated. Thanks in advance.

They get hot, and that's basically the only downfall to the CS130. I once took one apart and found that at the back by the guts there is a large black plastic disc that seems to block a lot of air flow from the heat sink. My understanding is that if you take the alt apart, cut out the black disc, and put it all back together that it'll run cooler.
