Stock stud size is 3/8". But it is possible that someone changed them to 7/16". Pull a valve cover and look.

stock is 3/8 on a SB Chevy. The stock ratio is 1.5. The 1.6 will give you more lift.

Many stock heads wont take 1.6 rockers.

I tried to install some on a friends 383 with 461 heads and the pushrods fouled on the factory cast slot/guide,

The stock stud size is 3/8" as reported. The issues is not with the rocker but with the slot in the head for the push rod. If you want to use the 1.6, you MUST elongate the push rod slot. You need to do this even with some aftermarket heads. There are a couple of ways to do this. I think Summit has a tool to use so that this can be done with a hand drill. I do vintage racing and use the 1.6 on the intake and 1.5 on the exhaust as this works with the cam that I have. There have been some documented studies that show that you do not need anything more than 1.5 on the exhaust. If the head does not have screw in studs, have them put in.
