guys, not really got the funding right now, but tryin to figure out what i want so ill know what to shoot for.
i have a 350 tranny in my car now, and was thinking of a 5 speed, but the linkage and stuff will be a real pita to install, so it seems anyway, and it seems 700r4s are not too hard to come by, cheap that is
what would you guys recommend? going to build a 383 before i get tranny, and i want something that will be strong enough to hold up, but still i would like to get outta town without breaking the bank.
I'm in the same boat as you. I'm looking for a 350 block now to build my 383. Tranny's are in supply where I live, its just a matter of picking the best one to do the job.
Krazy, So it seems from other posts on this topic, a 200r4 tranny with chebby pattern is better swap,.....I did't even know they came at all with a chebby pattern, so I did a 700r4......700 is larger and heavier I"m sure...and it fits easily, with few mods.....and can handle most 383 build ups....I understand that supposedly a 200 can be even more rugged....
even being smaller and hopefully lighter....
at any rate that o/drive is valuable for any street driven car....
For the record...all 200R trannys have dual bolt pattern bellhousings. They will all fit behind Chevy, as well as all the other GM manufacturers. The 700R is Chevy only pattern.
I did an engine on an '84 G National, and I didn't notice the tranny bellhousing having extra bolt holes....John.....are you sure of that interchangeability????
seems strange for GM, they allways USED to have a BPOC pattern and a Chevvy/gmc pattern....
Yes Gene im pretty sure all the 200R's have dual bolt pattern. You may not have noticed since the GN engine had been bolted to that tranny for so long. So that Buick pattern just stood out so much you missed the other holes. They are all there for both patterns. Its much easier to notice them if the tranny is totally clean.
