parking brake rebuild

finally got around to that job today, and was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't the bear of a job i expected. as recommened, loosened the backing plate bolts, used silicone gasket material to hold the retainig pins in place, tied the retaing springs with dental floss, and made a brake tool by notching the end of a slot screw driver. i had to enlarge one of the spring retainer caps because the cap wouldn't rotate 90* to lock into place. it took me a little while to determine which side of the shoes the upper spring went on, but i laid it out on the bench and it all fell into place. all in all, i would rather do this than change a brake booster!
We are going to do a repair help page on this the next time one comes in to our shop needing one. Part of the trick is electrical tape and swivels in sequence with extensions. Once you get the socket on the nut, you just fire up the impact to run it down or take it off.
