Default Is this a bad converter? (WITH sound)

I have this terrible sound in my TH400, when I put the tranny in either D, 1,2 or 3. When in P, R or N, everything is fine. This sound came suddenly, and without some sort of warning.

This weekend I took the tranny out of the car, and opened it. Couldn't find anything unusual, but I changed all the clutches and gaskets, since I already was inside there.

Today I mounted the tranny in the car, but the sound was exactly the same as it was before... :-( The sound can be described as if someone turn over the starter, when the engine already is running.... an annoying, irritable sound!!

Is it possible that the converter can make an loud, scratching sound? The strange thing is that its fine in revers, but not when put to D. I thought the converter would make same sound, whatever the gear was...

Anybody seen something like this?

Soundclip, me sitting in the car, and taking it to "D" three times....

hey man i had the same problem about 2 years ago on my 74, thought something was seriously wrong. look under your car and look at the inspection/dust cover. if its bent in, it will hit the flywheel. the fix= screw a screw into the cover, get a hammer, and pull it out. hope thats what it was

I would say it was something scraping the fly wheel as well but it would happen in R as well I would imagine. when you pulled the trans did the spines look worn in the forward direction. was there any visible wear on the fly ?

I also tried the engine with the dustcover removed, but with same result...

The sound is like something is scraped in the fly wheel, but when I pull down the tranny, I couldnt find anything unusual. The fly wheel seems alright. But the strange thing is the difference between "R" and "D"... I think if the problem was the fly wheel, it would be noisy no matter what..

Is it possible that you broke a motor mount?

Your going to take it apart to check it out anyway I ould just change the converter pop off the fly wheel and inspect both side. I would also check out you fan shroud cause if was a motor mount that could be the fan scaping the scroud. I couldn't hear the sound clip well on the laptop.

Always a pain to figure out. Try this. Get the garden hose and while its running spray water up on the flywheel if it stops temporarily at least you know the source.
