Thanks

Try grounding the wire coming from the sending unit if the gauge goes to empty your problem is in the tank unit.
Ive tried that and makes no difference. The only time anything makes a difference is when i remove t he power wire ,then the gauge goes to the full position.Sorry do you mean the hot wire or the ground wire. Thanks
If you have adobe, PM me with your email address and I'll send you a troubleshooting guide.
I would look for two things: 1. A bad ground on the tank. You could check this by grounding the tank with a wire and a couple of aligator clips. 2. A short in the sender wire. Take a long piece of wire and run it from the tank to the gauge and see if you get a different reading.
I was wondering what you found out about your gas gauge problem. My 73 does the same thing. I put new sending unit in and when I remove power wire gauge jumps to full. Thanks for the help.
If your gas tank has a bladder, which I'm not certain if your year does or not, I have seen more times that I can count that the bladder pulls away from the side of the tank a bit, (bulges out), and the float can't get by it. If that's the case you can gently bend out the float rod a bit so it will clear, and then you'll be back in business.

When you say power wire do you mean the tan wire at the tank?If so removing the tan wire from the sending unit with the key ON should make the gauge go to full.Grounding the tan wire to the fuel tank should make the gauge go to empty. Is this what yours does?

I will need to clean the wire to see the color of it, but it is the wire with the round grommet on the end that plugs on to the pin connector. I will have to ground this wire to the tank to see if it goes to empty. After putting the new sending unit in I put around 8 gallons of gas in the tank and the gauge still does not register. There is no blatter in this tank. Thanks for the help.

Here's what I have tried in the past. Remove the sending unit from the car. Hook up only the electrical wires to the pump. Turn the ignition to the on position BUT DO NOT START THE CAR. While looking thru the rear window look at the gas gauge as you move the float thru its range. If it works ok then your issue is probably with the tank if it has a bladder. To tell if its the bladder tie a 3 foot long piece of fishing line or string to the float. Pull the string through the opening where you fill with gasoline. Install the unit in the tank as normal. Turn ignition to the on but do not start poisition again. While looking through the rear window again pull on the string to raise the float and watch the gas gauge once again. If it stops a a 1/4 tank you bladder has collasped slightly which interferes with the swing of the float. If this is the issue, on the float arm it has a slight bend or jog in the arm. All you need to do is to increase this bend to make the arm just a little shorter.
Let us know what happens.
Good Luck
