Default Hooker Headers

Quick question. I have a 80 C3 with the CA 305 in it. I am installing a full set of new Hooker headers and 4" side pipes. Which tube on the driver side is the best to have drilled out for the O2 sensor or do I really need to have it since it is an 80? I have the threaded peice supplied by Summit Racing which is where I got the headers and side pipes from.

First off you only need the O2 sensor if you have a computer controlled system that used the input from that sensor. If you do not, then you don't need the O2 sensor.

That being the case, you also don't need to worry with it if you live in an area that doesn't require smog testing to pass emissions inspections.

Check with your local regulations on emissions.

I live in KS, which is no smog required. My system does have a ECM located in the battery box, but it was the first year Corvette used them and only in the CA models, so not sure if it effects it. I know I have the smog pump unplugged for a couple of days now and have seen no change. May just do the same with the O2 sensor and see if it doesn anything.

Thanks

Assuming that the ECM used in 80 CA cars is the same as the one used in 81s, DON'T DO IT!!!!! The ECM controls carb mixture and timing advance. The smog pump is a separate system and though connected, does not provide feedback.

If you remove the O2 sensor, the carb will run full rich all the time and you will not get any timing advance. You're fuel economy will go down the toilet and won't have any throttle response or power at high RPMs.

Thank you, am planning on having the 4th pipe drilled out and the nub welded in place for the O2 sensor. Thanks again

The additional bung will also help if you ever have a chance to hook up to a LM-1 fuel/O2 meter for some FINE tuning of the A/F mix.

I think you can order a set of headers with a bung already welded in. On mine I welded the O2 sensor on the driver's side on the collector in between where the side tube starts and where the 4 tubes come together. I like it there since it allows you to get a reading on all four cylinders rather than just one.

Thank you all. I had already ordered the headers (ceramic) and the sidepipes from Summit. They of course sent the bung as well and everything hooked up without any mods to the car or rocker panels. The original O2 sensor is working, though I thinkit runs a little lean on the idle and low RPM side. But when cruising and I accelrate, the response is instantanious and you feel the difference. Hookers are the way to go if anyone is considering it. Ceramic headers and ss side pipes. If installing an O2 sensor, got on the 3rd pipe and not the 4th because it will give you plenty of clearence due to the 3rd pipe corssing the 4th.
I took out the air pump since it was no longer needed and have noticed no change as a result of that. Fuel consumption is about the same accept of course if I open it up, then like any quad, it sucks it up.
