Instead of paying $ 350 for a pair of sidepipes I was wondering if exhuast stacks would work. I found a pair for about $100 on ebay, but they are 48" which is two inches longer than the hooker ones. I would have to fabricate the mounts and was also wondering if those could even be seen when they are placed on the car. Also would the muffler inserts work?

Can't say for sure on the stacks (4 inch dia?), but this question comes up often relating to the expense of Hookers or OEM pipes. Do a search to find a description of the ones I made for mine, or send me an e-mail at hcabplanalp@ucdavis.edu and I'll send you the info. I paid about $200.00 installed including the little bit the muffler shop did.
There are several older threads discussing home-built sidepipes. I have a set of 3" tubes tucked under a set of stock '69 covers on my 77. The 3" tubes with the turned-out ends came from a truck parts supplier.
I bought my side pipes from: sweet-thunder.com
perfect fit, nice sound, it was worth the $400.
and Mike is a heck of a nice guy to deal with.
good luck .....69VETT
Those were on my car when I bought it, complete with thè clumsy S pipes. They didn't last 5 minutes before ending up in the trash. IMO those cheap POS things are not corvette worthy. Also, they are not the correct length either, they are way too short (and hang low too)

I plan on doing the same when I get my original covers back from the plater.
Were you able to use the insulators between the 3" pipes and the covers?
Mark
I currently have 4" hooker side pipes that will suffice till the plater is done working his magic on the original '69 covers.
