Not Corvette related in the least, but we have a wealth of knowledge here on basically everything automotive, so please help me out. I have the opportunity to buy a 500" Caddy motor with a 400 Turbo behind it with 30K little old lady miles on it for a very decent price. It would be the perfect powerplant for my '40 Ford, but the first thing I'd like to know is how to properly identify it via #'s like is on our Corvettes on the passenger side near the water pump mounting bolt, where are they on the motor and what would be the # or letters designating it as to year and size. It is not in the original car any longer but in a half finished project. Thanks for any help y'all can give, Peace,,,Moosie

AFAIK the Corvette is the only GM car that has part of the VIN stamped on the engine block. You might try to see if there are any Caddy forums that might be able to help. Different GM divisions used to design and build their own engines so who knows if there was any standard for locating numbers. No other brand that I know of used a 500 ci engine so Caddy may have had it's own way of doing things, kind of like Corvette. Good luck.
