so i started to line up my air chamber and make marks to begin cutting and fitting. before i did that i put my l88 repo. drop base air cleaner on and it wont seat. it gets hung up on the distributer by at least a 1/2''. has anyone ran into this? or do i just need a carb. spacer? and will my
hieght be ok then for the matting surface?
I know nothing about the stock L88 hoods and the air boxes, but the L88 setup was used on a car with points and a separate coil. Your car has HEI, which is a larger unit. That might explain the clearance problem, though I don't know what options you have to correct the issue.
ya i figured the hei was the problem, wondered if maybe a not as deep drop base might work, but i have seen some hei units out there with this set up. spent good $ for all this stuff would like to use it- o ya this is a long style eckler hood and a ecklers chamber.
hei is not your problem. if you are using a relatively stock height intake on a small block then you don't need the L88 drop base air cleaner. I re-used my stock L46 drop base air cleaner (L88 from my understanding drops down another 0.5~1" furhter) and needed a 1" carb spacer and a 1" air cleaner base spacer to get the foam up high enough to properly seal to the hood. I had my valve cover air breather pipe cut & rewelded downward at a more 45* angle to make the angle of the preformed hose fit perfectly vs. buying after market hose
i have a not as drastic drop base laying around, so that mite work, or carb. spacer maybe, going to talk to the machinest who adapted my
q-jet to my aigap and see what he thinks. o ya it is about 4'' i plan on removing off the air chamber, scary when about to remove material off something expensive.
