Default busted diff

Pulled the diff out for a rebuilt and Ive found the carrier is broken. The gears appear damaged too.

Vansteel sell an eaton replacement. Is this better than stock, are there affordable better options? Ive already bought a bearing & clutch kit plus new fine spline yokes. Is it worth polishing the carrier?

Some parts are better than stock, however the powder machined spiders and carbon fiber clutches are not better than stock steel clutches and 17/10 forged spiders

Ive bought steel clutches and have fine spline spider gears to suit the yokes from Vansteel, are these ok?

After destroying my first rear end housing because the stock yoke ends ground away. I replaced it with a Toms rear end with 4.11 Richmond gears and the custom hardened yokes.

Then i started breaking the stock type posi housings every year or two until I bought the Tom's larger pinned posi housings for about $700 each. I have had this last posi unit for about 5 years.

Excellent unit - It has survived full throttle spins off the track and high speed one rear tire lockups with big rear road racing slicks

As George said the posi case with the 12 bolt cross shaft is strong. For most cars the stock posi case with HD cross shaft will be fine.

The best posi is one you can custom build. Nothing against any vendor but the new loaded Eatons would not be my first choice. They have less clutches, they're fiber coated which does hold up to abuse from what I've seen, the springs are huge so expect hammering if those powder metal gears are set too tight.

If you read my thread on posi tuning and building you'll get a lot of info to help you.

Carrier meaning the largest part that you see from outside the car or what the ring gear bolts to(case).I ask because I have a bare carrier.
edit -never mind I just saw you were from Australia

Do you have to pay some kind of big import. I've mailed birthday presents to guys like TT in Europe

I use the Tom's # 6 with 17 spline

Only 10% tax but the air freight to Australia for carrier and gears, plus, plus will be heafty. Seafreight is problematic and slow.

Ive been going over Toms site and like the look of the bigger pinned housing. The original broke at the pin hole.

Im struggling to justify the 12bolt rear as its only a street car but it will have a 533 and manual box.

His image makes me nauseous sorta like if some one used a pic of road kill for their avatar.
