Default Vetteless.. no more

After looking at a lot of vettes, I finally found a clean 75 in Ca. Original owner, rebuilt L82 & turbo 400. No rust, leaks, cracks, smoke, etc. New brakes and exhaust. Car drives great! It's sitting in a container right now, and the ship sails for Hawaii on Sat. Needless to say, I'm pretty excited about the whole thing, but.....after getting home and checking the VIN (which I should have done first), I see that the 5th digit is a 'J', which, from what I can find out, is a L48. The only other # I got off the engine was 15J163402, which was stamped as opposed to raised #'s, on the front of the block, passenger side. It has the L82 emblems on the hood, but I suppose anyone can put those on. I called the guy, and he said he didn't know anything about VIN's, but swears up and down it's the original engine. He said on the back of the block are the #'s 0010 or 010, which indicate an LT1, and it has a 4 bolt main. Not sure what all that means. He did the rebuild himself, supposedly building engines for the last 30 years. Either way, I'm happy with the car, it's clean and tight. Still a rookie in vetteland, so I thought I would post this to see if any of you more knowledgeable forumites have any thoughts or ideas. Thanks

If the VIN has a "J" then the car was definitely an L-48. All blocks (L48 and L82) in '75 have the raised block ID # of 3970010. There is no such thing as an LT1 in '75.

According to the Corvette Black Book, J is the L48, an L82 would be T.

The block number is 3970010 for either engine.

Congrats on your purchase. Now you need a new forum name

***EDIT*** - Gotta learn to type faster

LT1??? nope!! not in '75 anyways...

L82 probably not!!!

according to my black book, J in the vin indicates 350 ci 165 HP engine...

the block number is 3970010 which is the a very common block number common to many cars and trucks.... but it is the right casting # for a 75 vette....

look for the engine suffix code... (and build date)

the suffixes for a 75 are as follows::::

CHA,CHB,CHC,CHR.CHU.CHZ.CKC,CRJ,CRK,CRL, CRM,CUA,CUB,CUD,CUT

also the heads are the same for both l82 evidently... a 333882 which are cracking prone (im stuck with these too :( )

since you said you have an auto tranny (turbo 400) then id guess you suffix code should be one of the following, CHB,CRK, or with kalifornian emmision crap CHZ....

so it looks like you got a fake L82 !!! but thats no biggy!!!

enjoy the car anyways and mod it out.

:)
