Default Mini Starter only engages half the tooth ?

Was looking at the mini starter after I put the flywheel on and it seem when I pull the gear out manually it only engages half way with the teeth.
Any ideas what is going on ? There is no way to shim it back and forth.

I am also looking at whether the flywheel is correct and if anyone with a 350ci small block can take a measurement for the distance between the flywheel and the back of the block. I have exactly 1/2 an inch

Flywheel is Hays 10-125

Disengaged

Engaged

Also here is a pic of the OEM starter, does it look right or is the flywheel out too far ?

You told me mini starters were not needed to cut down on the twinkies. Almost looks like that starter gear could be turned around on the shaft for a better match up on the flywheel, but maybe thats not doable.

Good catch I probably did say that at one time. Times change and my opinion changes too. I would never have put an 18 inch wheel on my Vette a few years ago but now I have them

But seriously I am stuck here, I wanted to fire it up this weekend. I need to know if I have the right flywheel so I need a measurement from the back of the block where the bellhousing mates to the teeth on the flywheel. If I get the same measurement as mine ( 1/2 inch ) then I can drop the motor in and use the OEM starter. Someone has to have a 350 out with the flywheel on it.

Let me call TNBUSA. He has my stock 350 setting over at his house with the stock flywheel on it. I will get back with you in a bit.

Edit: I got no answer. They were in the mountains today riding motorcycles and may not have came home.

Someone help the man out here!!!

When i tried to fit up my mini i just disconnected the large wire from the solenoid to the DC motor (large round cylinder) and energized it with a 8 amp batt charger. That way I could hold the gear out with the batt charger and not turn the DC motor.
BTW that mini would not fit up to my 168 tooth flywheel no matter how i bolted it up as it required the smaller flywheel. U can look in my sig for the link to cardomain pix for more details.
But in your case i imagine u will just need to engize the solenoid to make it mesh all the way. BTW a small paper clip is 0.030" dia and just right to measure the gear teeth spacing.

Good luck,
cardo0

Loosen up them two mounting bolts a bit, just enough to slip the starter around a bit...tap that puppy to the back and try again....
there is more slop in them bolts than you know....

If you unbolt starter...how far can you pull the bendix out? Further than it is now...or is that it?

You might try a shim under the starter. This will move it slightly away from flywheel and allow it to go deeper possibly.

That is as far as it goes manually, I might energize it tomorrow and see if it comes out further. It does only get half way. Seem the teeth are about 1/2 in wide and the gear only engages about 1/4 inch. Not enough for me.

I did find something on their site I found interesting that was not included in there instructions in the box. It reads:

"Note: The CVR Protorque starter is designed to cross the flywheel between .400” and .500”. This is quite sufficient for this type of unit with proper shimming."

So it seems there is some gray area as to how much engagement you actually need. Or should I say, the starters they designed only engage the teeth a certain amount and others have probably questioned this.

The only thing that doesn't make sense is the fact the teeth on the flywheel are only .500" wide so there statement doesn't really matter, you are getting full engagement if " designed to cross the flywheel between .400” and .500”.

I am only getting about .200-.250" engagement.
