Default Rusty Jack

can anyone tell me how to remove a large amount of rust from my car's jack? The rubber body plug came out and water got on the insulation which soaked the jack and caused the rust. This is more than just a few licks with a wire brush.

Eastwood sells rust dissolver. That may work.
If you live by a farm supply depot, they sell a cleaner for the cow milking machines. I heard this stuff removes rust very well. (never tried it myself though...)

if it was me, rather than mail order, I would first try naval jelly. should be able to get locally and cheap. use a wire brush too.

I would use a sand blaster to remove the rust. That worked quite well for me when I bought a well used and abused jack. Functionally, it was very nice. Cosmetically, it was rusty and pitted. Ten minutes with a sand blaster, followed by a thorough air cleaning and then a good coat of primer and semi-gloss black.

just my 2cents. but... oxalic acid (wood bleach) removes rust on chrome completely and may do the same for your regular painted parts. you mix the wood bleach (home depot or other hardware store) with water and soak the part. within a day the rust is gone.

here is a link to the original information on it http://www.vintagebmx.com/community/...wtopic=4004702
