Default '76 tail light and blinker

My driver side blinker works just fine, it lights up when the brakes are on and blinks the way it should. My back up lights also work properly, but my passenger side blinker doesn't blink. It lights up, but it does not blink (it is also only lighting the smaller of the two filiments, whether the brake is applied or not).

I also have no tail lights. As soon as I turn on the headlights or the parking lights the fuse for the tail lights blow.

There are some other posts with somewhat similar problems, but not this same combination of problems.

I was just wondering if it is likely that these two problems are related, or if there is a common cause and (more importantly) solution.

THanks.

First off, test that socket for proper function with jumper 12V and ground wires from the battery.

Using the 12V wire, test for a solid ground.

Using the ground, test the socket with brake, tail, and signal.

If you get some funny readings you know something is up but a bad bulb can cause problems, likewise a bad socket can too.

Do the interior indicator bulbs both work? How about the front bulbs? When was the last time any of the front or rear 1157 bulbs have been replaced?

Oh, I probably should have mentioned that my dash/guage lights don't work either. I get all of my warning lights, but no illumination.

The indicator lights in the dash work for the drivers side, but the passenger side arrow does not light - I should probably note that the passenger blinkers light, but do not flash.

I cut the passenger side rear blinker socket out of the harness and tested it on the battery, and it worked perfectly.

before re-wiring it back into the harness I tested its ground by tying in its ground wire with the harness ground (in which all the lights apparently share a common ground) and testing the other wires against the positive side of the battery and it didn't light up at all - possibly a result of my attempt at "fixing" the problem.

After finding a solid ground for this socket, and wiring the green and brown wires back into the harness I am back to where I started - with a turn signal that lights, but doesn't blink and a tail light fuse that blows as soon as the lights are turned on.

I played around with the bulbs, switching them with other sockets and such, but the symptoms seemed the same regardless of the light bulbs.

Oh, and there is this; All of the small light sockets (IE license plate and side indicator lights) seem to have melted a little bit around the bulbs. -but I cut one out of the harness to test it and it light up just fine....It was a little dim, but I can't imagine that these tiny bulbs are meant to shine really bright anyways.

A new wiring harness would certainly eliminate the possibility of corroded/frayed wires and bad sockets, but a rear body harness costs like $260 from zip!!!...Anybody know where I could find one cheaper????

Thanks for your willingness to help.
I am certainly not an expert with electrical problems, and I would be completely lost without your help

if the light in the dash is out then the circuit for the blinker is not going to work right. brakes blow fuse, blinker not flashing, melted terminals, sounds like something is getting grounded out

Okay, so I went over all the wiring in the rear harness and, as far as I can tell, everything should work.

I tested continuity in the light switch between the power terminal and the other terminals at different positions in the switch and got nothing....so I orded a new switch -though its probably more likely that the problem is in my lack of knowledge of how the switch should work.

Nonetheless, I think I have ruled out faulty sockets, bulbs, chaffed wires, bare wires and wrong wiring. Once I get my new light switch I can rule that out too (unless that fixes the problem.....I am keeping my hopes low, but my fingers crossed)

I am having the same problem, more or less...

My turn signals work, but my brake lights blow the fuse. Oddly enough, the brake lights and the turn signal are on different fuses on my car. Is that normal?
