Power Steering Pump rebuild
In the interest of keeping my 79 as original as possible, I'm looking into rebuilding the power steering pump. Which is leaking pretty good. Initial research indicates there are special tools needed to remove and install the pulley. I have access to those tools, so that is not a problem.
I can spend about $15 on a seal kit, or $60 on a new pump, with core trade in (app.). Can anyone who has done this tell me how long it took, was it tricky even with the proper tools, and if they had it to do all over, would have just bought a pump? Like I said earlier, I'd like to keep the car as original as possible, but I'm not beyond beyond replacing faulty original parts. I'm just looking for information to make an informaede decision. Thanks.

If you're into originality and can get the tools, the job is easy. I did mine myself. The part that takes the longest is cleaning up the parts and spraying on new paint and waiting for it to dry. It really isn't a hard job.

Well, I bought a rebuilt pump once......Should have done it myself.
The pressure relief spring was not right on the new pump and I had little or no power assist. Since I had not returned the old pump yet I switched out the springs and fixed the problem. So, I would say do it yourself or get one of the new style race pumps and fix it right. Might as well change the hoses too while you are at it.
