Default 1980 air conditioning question

hello everybody,

This is my first post so please go easy on me. I've watched the forum for several months every since I bought my C3 corvette. I've been very impressed with the quality of the answers and the apparent class of the folks in the forum. Several responses to questions have already been a great help with the repair of the air conditioning on my 80 corvette but I do have a question I'd like to post on the air conditioning system. After replacing all the usual parts you'd expect when rebuilding a system for R134 I've noticed the compressor (new GM not rebuilt) seems to cycle or kick in and out every 6 to 8 seconds. We put 2.2lbs of R134 in the system (or 80%). The air blows ice cold. I can hear a relay or something clicking behind the glove box area. Is this 6-8 second cycle process normal or do I have a weak relay or something? As part of the rebuild I did replace the compressor re-cycle switch.

Does the clicking correspond at all to the compressor clutch function? Meaning, when the relay is clicking on and off is the compressor clutch opening and closing?

Guys now I am stumped, the compressor is not cyclying (kicking in and out) with the car in Park or netural. I checked with the hood raised with the motor running. Nor is the clicking sound coming from in the dash(sounds like behind the glove box). I dropped the hood drove it up the road and the clicking resumed 6-8 seconds apart. When it clicks the motor loads somewhat is why I assumed the compressor was kicking in and out. When you turn off the air while driving the clicking stops. Any ideals what to check? Charging system?

Sorry I can't. I took the car to two different reputable air shops that have performed work for me for years and they both said the system was charged ok. registering 80% on both their equipments. I was wondering about the charging system but the amp guage doesnt bounce around during the clicking. A possibility may be that someone before me unhooked the cruise control on this 57,000 mile original car. They removed the cable from the trans and removed the servo from the motor but the fender unit is still on the car wired in. I though I'd remove the CC fuse and see if it still clicks when driving it.
