Did the same research a while back and spoke to our forum differential gurus. I ultimately ended up with a diff rebuild using tomsdifferential.com gears, i.e. US Gear. They also sell Richmond gears, which are good quality units, but might be a bit "noisy" until worn in (this was the feedback of some members).
I understand there is quite a nationwide shortage of US Gear 3.73 units right now.
Whatever you do, check out some of the posts using a search and see what vendors Mike and Gary typically deal with.
i was going to use a set of 4.11 from them a wile back but they were on back order. i ended up using yukon gears and they set up good and don't whine . i heard 3.73 are on backorder till 09?
Sometime ago when i wanted to go to 4.11 rear gears i wanted to buy frm Tom's but he speaks too quick at the phone and i couldnt get a word of what he was saying (and it seems they do not reply to mails...) so i got Vansteel to get the parts from Tom and build with his parts what i needed, best of both worlds...great (Tom) parts and Dan top quality service and courtesy.

I guess sometimes you need that combo to get things done.
Also, would it be more cost efficient to rebuild my existing diff or buy one already rebuilt?
TIA.
If you have the time and are handy following Gary's (gtr1999) instructions would save you a lot of $ rebuilding your own. I did not have the time so I had Gary do mine. It was money well spent. I know I got the best rebuild money can buy and in the unlikely chance that there is an issue I know he will stand by his work. You can certainly find less expensive rebuilds then Gary's that might make the difference between buying one and doing it yourself not seem worth it but remember, you get what you pay for.
Good luck
