When I put car in drive or reverse I hear a clunk. When I start backing up I hear three knocks. I have all new u-joints, New trailing arm bearings and new carrier bushing. Checked bushing to make sure it was tight. turned half shafts by hand to see if I hear noise or feel anything but it must need a load on it to make the sound. I once had a loose brake caliper that sound very much like a carrier bushing but they also appear OK. I suppose even though the u-joints are new they could be bad. It has set in a body shop for the last year and it wasn't making that noise prior to my best recollection. Thanks for any help
On a vette I had a few years back, I would get the same type of clunking when put in reverse with wheels turned and starting to roll. I thought it was in the rear.
Turned out the the idler arm to frame nuts had loosened somhow. The stress on the front linkage while the wheel was turned and car was moving cuased the idler arm to pop in and out. Tightened it up and the problem went away.

Everything seems OK. The pitman arm appears loose but the power steering valve is what I think is moving back and forth. I think it is supposed to.
