So im really new to Corvettes and I have a question on the potential of an L82 Engine.... I noticed mostly everyone has a different version of the engine L88 or a drop in crate motor... but only a few have L82.
my question is what potential does the L82 have with simple bolt on upgrades?
I believe it comes stock with 220bhp / 270tq. I plan on having internals done and bolt ons. I don't plan on doing any force inductions.
Without more info on your current engine which I would assume is stock, most people say changing the cam and going to higher flowing heads would be tantamount to much bigger horsepower gains. With that said, my 78 L-82 4spd has only external modifications for the most part and I am pleased with how the engine has responded. I run a K&N filter with the stock intake with no pollution control at all (I saved all the AIR pump hardware and exhaust manifolds) on top of a Holley 4175 Quadrajet replacement (many like the original Quadrajet carb). I blocked the EGR valve and run 1.5 roller rockers as well. On the exhaust, I have 2.5 true duals, shorty headers (McJacks although there are others) and Monza Turbo mufflers and the whole system is not that loud but can sound "mean" at higher revs. I also have a hypertech coil with a Crane HEI module replacement in the stock distributor. The car makes really good power but difficult to say without being on a dyno. It also runs cool which it did not do before the mods. Going to a higher compression like 10 with a cam change I imagine would really wake the motor up without changing the heads which I would not do on a 78 pace car since now you are changing parts of the original engine. I would opt for changing psitons and cam if you go that route which no one can see. Cleaning up the stock heads would help airflow as well. These changes would really wake up the motor in my opinion but I am no expert.
The "bones" of the L-82 are pretty good.
Forged steel crank, Impact extruded pistons, 4 bolt mains, and a few other goodies. The only real negitive is low compression ratio and all the smog add ons. As jb78L-82 says, buy some good heads and a cam change and it will wake it up.
I am in the same situation. I have a 76 L82 that I want to do a head and cam swap. I wanted to use Brodix heads but not sure if I should go with the 180's or 200's? Or are the large port vortec heads just as good?
