It means it was a model made between 1969 and 1976. Nothing more. All of the Vettes in those years had the "Stingray" badge, just as all the ones from '63 to '67 had the "Sting Ray" badge.
In 63, the new body & chassis was called a Sting Ray. When the body was redone in 68 at first called Sting Ray & then used Stingray. Emblems are for identification & some can not identify w/o the emblem. Seems some place far more importance on emblems than the factory ever did, the factory wanted to change the new car so that it could be identified as new at the time.
Chassis essentially same from 63-77, body essentially same 68-77 & interior essentially same from 68-77.
There can be no question that 68-77 are Stingrays.
Can be debated on 78-82.
Hi
My 68 got the STINGRAY emblems retrofitted.
Now everybody calls my car the correct name, even without knowing it. :D
The General should have called them SHARK instead of STINGRAY, or ?
May be big blocks should even be called more radical ! :reddevil
Gunther
to me as a conversation thing, a shark is 68-82, and a stingray with either spelling is 63-67, that just simplifies the whole thing....
I allways call my car a shark....been called that way on most of the streets by most hotrodders for a long time....;-)))
Frankly, I think someone at GM just thought it sounded cool. So they stuck it on the car. They tried to drop it in '68 but they must have heard a backlash cause it was back in '69. I'm glad mine says "stingray" on the side. That's mainly because I get those "Wow, and it's even a Stingray - hey" comments. LOL
The General should have called them SHARK...Gunther
Yeah.. I think so too. :yesnod: My car is up on J-stands without the tires on right now and WOW  looking at it from the front...it sure does look like "Son of JAWS"... not a flat, slow, bug eyed alien looking fish with a pencil d**k .....I mean.... tail :yesnod:

I know what ya mean...older folks call it a "Vette"....young kids are always hollering "Hey! It's a STINGRAY" Sometimes I think the kids don't even know it's a Vette.
STINGRAY or CORVETTE...they both work for me :jester
