ok so my starter has some nasty grinding sounds when i turn the engine over. it starts decently but it sounds horrible and sometimes shudders a little bit like the teeth are slipping and then engaging.
anyways i ripped out the starter and my friend stopped by in his girlfriends 84 Vette.... as usual her car wont start now and im stuck waiting to get this new starter installed. question is do you guys think its just my starter? it has a lot of shims on it.. like 5-6 on each bolt and the teeth are definately stripped a little bit but my flywheel seems decent. the teeth are a little chipped but nothing more than 1/4 of a tooth and some seem untouched. i called the only place open today and they said it was my flywheel also and wanted to rip my tranny out.
what do you all think? get it tested and try a new one with maybe a shim taken out? i got an hour or so before i head out to get it fixed. thanks everyone
put a starter on it so you can drive. Then drive down and buy a new flywheel ring gear.then pull the tranny, take the fly, wheel down to the machine shop, have them Rand R the ring gear.Or,go to the junkyard and buy a flwheel.5 or 6 shims seem a bit excesive to me..find out why.Bottom line,e,that ring gear needs replacing or you will coninue to go thru starters.
Is it a possibility that a new starter will last say a month or two? the one that just went bad was about 4 months old. im going to Japan in November and putting in a new motor and trans after i get back so if it lasts then i should be ok. the place that put it in overcharged me for it, said i couldnt get it out without taking off my sidepipes, and generally sucked at everything they did to my car and i havent been back since so the shims might be overdone... actually now that i think about it, they could of done that just to ensure it slips enough to cause more damage so i have to bring it back. just a thought?
Why are you using shims? The ring gear is obviously bad and the use of shims will only increase the distance of the starter to the ring gear teeth or what is left of them and therefore make it worse not better. And you probably dont need a starter either. Check the ring gear to see if its chewed up,
got it tested out and besides shooting a lot of sparks not much else happened lol. the starter was bad and the gear would spin but not extend and spin the flywheel. only $120 with military discount
and i honestly think the place that put it on knew using so many shims was going to destroy my starter and flywheel so i took some off when i put the new one back on. starts up like a champ now. and my friend got her car started... she thinks the battery is being drained but its working now.... damn i love Corvettes
