During a short post Hurricane Ike and Gus cruise the speedo quit working. I just went and picked the 78 at father in laws garage. How hard is it to replace? Any tips appreciated.
Start with the simple things. May well be the cable. Do you have cruise control? If so, it could be the transducer for the cruise control. They sometimes freeze up breaking the cable or the gear in the transmission.

Do you have cruise control or not? That makes a difference in the diagnosis and changing the cables is not a hard task at all.
Do the simple thing first - check under the car/tranny for loose fittings/broken cable/etc. Then hopefully you won't have to take it out of the dash to repair. As a reference my speedo on a earlier year quit working - I had to take it out of the dash and spent $150 just for the repair. The nice repair folks made a point of you bring us the speedo or else they would not work on it.
Good. Get under the car, disconnect the speedo cable from the transmission, and connect a drill to it and spin it. Have a look at the speedo while doing this. If the speedo reacts then the problem might be a gear in the transmission and if the speedo does not react it's either the cable or a bad speedo.
