I have a mint 74 L82 covert and would like to upgrade my radio and place speakers in the back cubby. I would like to keep the price reasonable. Does anyone have any suggestions? :chevy
I have a 75 Convertible that I have been using as a daily driver for 20 years. I changed my radio in 1987. I drove up to Anaheim and bought a Pioneer brand from the guys from Autosound. They are good people. I also bought one of their speaker set up to fit in the back. It didn't fit correctly so I took it back. I just went out and bought a couple of 6x9s (Pioneer) 3 way speakers and then went to Radio Shack and bought a couple of speaker boxes. I velcroed the bottom of them to keep them from sliding and they have been there since. I replaced the front dash speakers with Pioneer 2 ways. This year I bought a Pioneer CD (6disc) and installed it between the two speakers in the back.
Its a great stereo system for little money. It sounds good when you
are stopped at a light otherwise you can't hear anything in these convertibles when your going down the road!!
I changed my radio to a Pioneer. I put two 8s in the back and a six disc changer. Still had room for my tops. Sound was great. Click on the link on my sig to see some pics.
If you don't mind purchasing on line check out http://www.crutchfield.com.
Bought a CD tuner for my last two Toyota trucks from them. Comes with ALL wiring harnesses so you don't have to cut wires. Also comes with disassembly instructions for your particular car. Great company and awesome tech advice on the phone. Great prices on everything, CD palyers, tape decks etc.
Bought home stereo components there as well.
Just my .02
Stinger, if you want to keep your convertible nice and happy, do NOT buy any kind of aftermarket stereo...the theives/vandals are still out there...
leave the stock stereo/radio in place, and get some hidden or portable sound source to either drive the stock amps with mods or another amp somewhere wired to stock appearing speakers.....
especially with a rag top, it 's just NOT worth all the risk on getting your car all messed up over some sounds....period...most expensive music in the world....
I wanted to keep my dash stock including the original radio. I left the original wiring intact and removed the crappy factory speakers and installed four new 4x6 Infinity's in the dash and kick panels and ran new wires to the back.
Made a custom box for the Sony AM/FM Cassette head unit, Sony 10-disc changer, Alpine and MTX amps and another three compartment air-tight box for two 6x9 Infinity's and a MTX 10" Sub in the rear (had another sub under the dash but have since removed it). All are controlled with wireless remote velcro'd to my shifter plate. Also have bass volume control on the side of my console.
Was it reasonably priced?? Depends on how bad you want very loud and clear music with top down at Interstate speeds
I would have to agree with everybody else. Go with another system like Cajun75. I'm currently in the process of putting in a jvc 12 disc changer. My dash was already cut because the original radio was stolen and my uncle put in an aftermarket many years ago. Plus a stereo in the back is less conspicuous(sp?) than a new one in the front. And you can make your own box for it with plywood and carpet. Lastly, the dash is really hard to cut. I mean REALLY hard to cut. I did it today with a mini-hacksaw and from the chunks I cut out, it looks like it's not aluminum, but might be STEEL! :boxing
And plywood is much easier to cut than steel :yesnod:
