Yep, last summer I was driving up my usual mile long uphill 'S' turned road. Had a very hot mocha in my left hand, listening to tunes, etc. Went around the first turn using my left knee on the steering wheel to hold the turn and not spill the mocha. Went brain dead and pushed in the clutch to up-shift. The non-pwr steering straightened the car up 'right now' and put me instantly in the oncoming lane. Panic, regrab steering wheel, cap pops off mocha, burn nuts, :cry , pull car over jump out, unzip and fan pants. All in all not a bad 100 feet or so.
Tell you what, my daughter was with me on way to get her younger brother a cat for xmas...age 8-1- or so...anyway vette got away from me in a hard right turn, and slid left toward dividing strip....so I vaguely remember turning the wheel...FAST, and cussing about which end of this damn car was going first....and a comment about get back there, axx....
so I looked at her, and she had this wide eyed terrified stare.......
the first time I ever put my foot to the floor and it poped into second and barked the tires. (shift kit)...I can honestly say I wasn't expecting that, I scared the hell out of me. I felt like I was loosing control of the car(I wasn't)...I slowed down and went slow all the way home...the next day I tried it again. :jester
Re: ever scare yourself while driving?? (daniel77350)
I had a couple of scary experiences driving in the rain, and now it appears to me that the only way to drive safely in the rain is by not turning the steering wheel and pressing the accelerator at the same time... :D
In normal driving conditions, what really scares me is noticing sometimes that I'm driving like an azzhole... :jester
Not so much anymore. Whenever I first got the 'Vette I used to "hotrod" around town a little bit. Now with some driving experience under my belt I find myself cruising along at 50mph....and slowly creeping through town. I'll occassionally open her up for a nice 0-60 run on a nice open straight stretch but for the most part I've calmed myself down :D.
**** YES!!! Going airborne sucks. (Especially when you don't expect it.)
This is my (for now) one and only bonehead manuver. EVER.
I was driving a '94 Ford Ranger (actually the reason I got the 'vette) on a back road near here.
On this road was a bridge roughly 5 feet higher than the road and, as I learned,
has very steep ramps. I'm going about 55 when I hit it, kabang---vrooooooom I'm airborne
nose goes down truck lands 3/4 of the way accross the bridge and sh## bounces. Airborne again.
Not nearly as high as the first one but now I have another problem, bridge ends and road goes back
to normal height, I'm 5' in the air again. Now it gets really interesting. You see, the road made a left
something that is hard to adjust for while you're in the air. I land, hop and skitter as I zoom into the center of an empty cornfield. YEE FLIPPING GODS!!! How am I going to explain wrecking my dad's
truck!!?!! I got out reluctantly to look at the damage. Hmm... No body panels scratched, dented,
or ripped off. Even the front air dam is in place and untouched save for a little dead grass in it and the radiator. Wheels pointed in the same direction, good, good. No appearant coolant leaks and oil press. fine, let's try to move. It does. Got back to the road and sped up (at this point 35 felt like 90) and everything seemed OK. Tracked straight, no unusual noises. GREAT!!! Got towards home and did notice a strange sound though. Turned out to be a small stick (long but thin) lodged between bottom of the truck and the driveshaft.
I used to knock Fords. Now I know what they meant by built "Ford tough."
This was an event of extreme luck. No oncoming cars to land on, no fences, trees or ditches to land in. I felt sick for a week. By far the stupidest thing I've EVER done. Car related or otherwise.
---------edit-----------
D'oh! Just saw "while driving 'Vette" Well, thankfully it wasn't the 'vette.
daniel.. "the next day i tried it again"..man, i laughed long at that...too funny..
:jester What can I say? It was as much fun as it was scary. There is a straight road right when you turn off the highway to go to my house, I usually punch it down that road now. Its fun because Im usually going past the highschool(on the road I punch it), right when the kids are getting out, so I like to give the ricers a taste, plus I know a lot of them, and they used to doubt my vette-ownership because I always worked on it while I was in school, didn't finish it until I graduated. In fact I never drove the 'vette to highschool anyway, to risky. Jealous people do crazy things.
1. Did a 360 on a two lane road (Highway 1 north of San Fancisco in the mountains). I saw Cliff, Mountain, Cliff, Mountain... Had a freind with me a freinds watching from a car behind. Noone wanted to ride with me after that one.
2. First barrell roll down the back straight at Devils bowl.
3. First left hand turn I took in my current 78. Slung it in there like I was on a dirt track. Two curbs and a median later I discovered that corvettes dont like to be slung...
whats happening with the car situation..are you keeping the vette???
Probably not. It will be gone by april(goes up for sell around march 1). :cry :cry I will have to get it back together and enjoy it while I can. I will probably only have 1 more week of driving, because I have to put it back together, then Feb 1 it goes to the body shop for color sanding and buffing(free to me), and will probably be there 2-3 weeks, then i'll focus on selling it. Im going to talk to the chevy dealership about putting it in their showroom("to draw people in" will be my approach, "to help me sell it" will be the catch).
Are you interested? :jester I'd like to get at least 8K for it. It'll be in better condition by the time to sell comes. Im focusing on things that will improve resell value. Before the engine detail it was prolly worth 6K...hopefully with this and a few other cosmetic things it'll boost its value.
I'd like to get 8K because Im looking at a '94 BMW 325i 'vert(or the less powerful, but cheaper 318i). Its no corvette, but I think it will be a fun little car that will last me a while and keep me excited about driving. And hopefully the ladies will like it too. :jester
Re: ever scare yourself while driving?? (ZD75blue)
the sig stays, but I'll just add "In memory of:" on top, plus a website dedicated to it with tons of pictures(I'll take before its gone)....One day I will own one and paint it the same color...My hope is I will be able to find this one after college and buy it back...
I don't plan on leaving, this place will keep me sane when Im vette-less...
Remember, me being vetteless is only temporary :)
Daniel
EDIT: ZD, one day we'll have to get together and bench race. I'll be in charlotte by fall, and I have to go up there in february or march for an interview with the school...Maybe we can get together for some lunch or something. If I still have the vette I'll bring it, if not you'll probably see my "new" wheels
