Check you can buy some replacement first. If it's the chrome/stainless strip then AFAIK it's almost impossible to buy. (Or at least that's what I was told by the paint shop.) If it's rubber then I don't know.

When I painted my 79 I wound up doing a very careful masking job on the edging. If it's black you can buy new edging.

If memory serves, it's glued in place and might have a small trim screw in it in a couple of places. Check the AIM.
