When I asked BTO about why they don't use a vacuum switch, they pretty much said exactly what you just did. They said it oscilates from locked up to unlocked too much, and they have trouble with cammed engines with low vacuum. If I want it to pull like a raped ape, I'll just keep it in 1st 2nd or 3rd, and leave 4th for cruising on the highway

A vacuum switch takes some tinkering to work properly. There's no reason you need to install one initially though. As was mentioned they will switch back and forth constantly without some sort of restiction in the vacuum line. I went to a junkyard and got an inline restictor/check valve which solved the problem.

The BTO kit locks up pretty much whenever the transmission is in 4th gear and the brakes are not pressed. Is this a bad system? I suppose if I am in 4th gear I am probably not going to be doing any hard acceleration since it will downshift to third in that case right? Will this cause the car to slow down quickly in 4th gear when I let off the gas not allowing me to "coast"?
