Default Stalling while driving...HELP!

Well here we go again... As I pull into traffic to make a left turn, my vette tried to stall. It has been very long since this has happened. And it almost got me and my baby hit! I posted this a long long time ago...

Well here I am now, you see my problem. I thought I got the problem resolved...Nope! Well what I have done to her is a Edelbrock 600 (Performer Series) (free) , new fuel pump and I have to get a new fuel filter every other week. Why? My tank is so rusty that the fuel sending unit is bad and it sends crap all the way up. So I have to use a stick to measure gas! I know I am going to catch **** for this. But I live on my own making payments and trying to save for a fuel tank. Only making 15k a year at a dealership. Other than that, it sucks.

Any suggestions? Also I still have the Quad-drajet! I dont know if its still bad or not, but when i was reading this...

You might not have to get a new fuel tank. Do a search on this site. Seems like there have been some threads regarding how to refurbish a fuel tank. If I'm remembering correctly, there is some type of etching chemical you can use to tackle the rust and then there is some type of coating you put on the inside to seal the tank. Might be cheaper and buy you some time. Hope this helps.

clean the tank or suffer the consequences! .... pretty simple,
drain it, remove it, remove the sending unit,
power wash the tank Internally, this will reveal the true tank condition.
completely dry it, they do make tank sealer you can use if needed.
if the sending unit is rusty, which it is, if its orginal, replace it.

CE, some of us have been there too BUT it will get better Pull the tank and clean it out with a tank prep kit from summit or a motorcycle outfit. OR check out a salvage yard for the newer style with the bladder. I sound like your pick up is getting blocked or worse yet rusted through. GOOD LUCK

Thanks for the replies! I will do some hard research on reconditioning the fuel tank. I didn't even know they had that type of treatment!?!

It really got to me today since it stalled and almost causing a wreck.... Whooo

I looked at Eckler's awhile back and said it would be $400 for a tank and a fuel sending unit.

But eventually right?

I wouldn't waste the time with the tank treatments. I see a lot of people post about them - but have never seen anyone use it successfully. Save your time and money for a new tank.

HOWEVER - while you're saving, you NEED to clean the old junk out or this will be a problem.

Pull the tank, clean it out (powerwash and dry), remove the sending unit and clean it up - install a new strainer (only a couple of bucks) and a new gasket (also only a couple bucks) - you may even get your old sending unit working again just by cleaning it off and cleaning the contacts.

Reassemble and at LEAST you won't be throwing crud through your system until you can get a new tank.

be sure to blow out the fuel line to the fuel pump also

Happens all the time with motorcycles. My Dad's 78 Honda sat from ~1990 to 2000 with bad gas in it. He was constantly fighting the rusty tank. A lot of motorcycle shops can do the acid dip, or hot water or whatever. Cleans it back to shiny metal. The only caveat is (for him) is that you lose the outside paint as well!

We one time put a bunch of big nuts and bolts in and literally shook the crap out of it. Kinda physically, abrasively "scratched off" the rust. It worked ok. He bought a plastic acryllic goop to put inside. I don't know what exactly it was, but a small puddle dried on the workbench and it wouldn't come off.

The only prob is you have to remove the tank. I don't know how feasible this is for you. But if it were me, I'd consult some motorcycle shops around. I guarantee they know exactly what to do.
