ok well i been slowly restoring my 79 but yesterday when i put my heads on i noticed a small port behind the head but at the same time my heads fell in the pin holes perfect and the bolt holes lined up perfect so i cant figure this out.. it may just be in the casting but i dont know.. and cant say how it was before because i took the heads off the car while the motor was still in it so i couldnt see this... so here is. the pic

No need to worry, that passage seen behind the head is drilled into the main oil gallery. then the port seen in the picture just behind the intake manifold is drilled down to intersect the first passage. plugs are put in as required.

You probably didn't notice it because they are usually filled with grime.

hmmmmmmmmmmmm i dont know. my 79 doesnt have any open holes sticking out the side of the heads. you sure you have them on the correct sides? LOL! you may want to get some others to chime in on this. I know of one hole that is down in front by the fuel pump on small blocks that needs to be plugged, and usually is but that isnt it. shouldnt the heads cover all that area like the old ones did?

Ridge. I will be in Louisville this weekend...meeting with Wilcox and Bruthish at various times. I can have a look at it if you like. Anyway, there needs to be a plug in that hole. Usually if they are removed by a machine shop they are re-installed by them too. Without a plug you will not have any oil pressure and probably a massive leak too. It's hard to see down in that bore but if you cannot see the plug, you can use a hanger or oil dipstick tube to feel for it. Without a plug the probe will go all the way to the bottom of the block.

The plug should be right there at the top of the block where the head is, maybe 1/4 " down. It almost looks from the picture that the plug is there, but can't quite tell for sure............

If I'm not mistaken, there should be a port under the head (one you can barely see) and one at the back of the manifold you might need to plug depending on where you put your oil pressure sensor.

the heads will go on any side of the motor... there is not a head just for one side

thats what i was worried about but after i got a better light and slept for a few hours i looked and seen the plug but no i disassembled the whole block down then took it to a machine shop to be bored, square decked, etc etc.. 3 pages worth of work at the shop not counting the cam kit, transmission build and etc...

you know i find it funny how weekend projects turn into 6 month builds lol
