sorry i have no picture ( i will tomorrow) but my speedo has started ticking behind the dash. i see my needle bounce at low speeds at the same time as the tick noise happens. the faster i drive the quicker the ticking but anway at the back of my dash where the cable connects i can see a small copper like tab . how does this come off to remove and inspect my cable. i have a right hand conversion so getting my hand in there is even harder than normal. anyone have any pics or a good explanation on how it comes off?
If yours is the same as my 69, the copper looking clip thing is indeed a clip. Picture a "V" turned on it's side. Mine just releases when you push one side of the "V" towards the speedo. Push the clip and pull the cable out. It worked like that for mine. Hope this helps
thanks TANK and DUKE . i did that but it didnt come so thought i was doing something wrong.it must be just a bit tight after 27 years in there. i will just have to give it my full fury !!!
Could be several things.Just could be loose at clip.Need lube in cable.Driven gear stripped .Drive gear stripped or clip came off gear in tran.Good luck
I’m in the middle of doing a “Ticking Noise in the Speedometer” for our web site.
This problem could be something as simple as the speedometer cable, and it could also be the first worm and magnet slipping over the second worm gear in the speedometer.
If the odometer is not working on the car or jumping, the problem more than likely is in the speedo head and not the cable. (If your speedo works and the odometer is not working you are in need of a speedometer repair, the sooner the better since you can do more damage to the internal parts of the speedo).
I would try the cable first, and if this solves the problem then great.
As far as getting that darn clip to release the cable. . . This can be a problem. You have to push the clip towards the back of the car and then push the cable the same way before pulling it off. It will kill your finger, and I’ve had to use a small screw driver and both hands to get them loose before.
thanks blokes !!!! all fixed. and yes your right it did kill my thumb. i just had to pull a bit harder when i pressed the cable. i had no room to get 2 hands in there. i just had to depress it with one finger and get ANGRY with it uing the others.i put a quick spray of inox in the hole at the back of the speedo and put a little lick of grease on the end of the cable. stuck it back in and went for a drive. no noise, no needle bouncing, smooth as a ....anyway all good now.

i hate to go off topic, but, and i hope i'm not going to embarrass your wife (or even worse, your daughter), do all the girls in queensland look like that?
Here is a tool I made umpteen years ago so I didnt have to get angry and also pull muscles in my neck and back trying to get the darn thing out.......... pat. pending
