My wife's 69 L46 350/350 has poor manners around town, and I am considering changing the carb from the square bore Edlebrock to a spread bore (Holley).
Her engine has a bit more than the stock 350 hp cam, and headers. What size carb would be ideal for a 400 hp SBC?? What do you think of the Edlebrock carbs? Should I rebuild the Edle or look for a nice Holley 4150 spreadbore??
i have a edelbrock on another car that has a standard 350 in it.its a camaro. it starts first time every time and idles perfectly straight away. it never hesitates and on the highway just purrs. its economy is awesome as well. i sure am going to miss it when i bomb that motor. so maybe yours is just in need of a tune. holley is def more performance orientated but your edelbrock should be the smoother and most efficient for your motor.
I've had several Edelbrocks and no performance issues with any of them. Maybe there is a timing problem or something with the ignition. These things can be blamed on the carb, then you replace the carb, problem is still there and you're out a few hundred.
I have had Edelbrocks, Holleys and Quadrajets over the years. With the Edelbrock or Holley, you have to choose fuel economy or performance, you can't have both no mater what anyone tells you. With the Quadrajet, you can. Also, new Holley products have serious quality control issues. Rebuild a Quadrajet yourself, or get one from one of the sources recommended by forum members. You will be glad you did.
Edelbrocks (Carter Aluminum Four Barrel - AFB) are good, simple carbs. Just tune 'em and go. Holleys are also good, but can be more finicky. Quadrajunks are more precise (variable cfm) carbs, and are mis-understood. I have had success with them all. Before changing carbs, I would make sure that is the problem. Which carb? Qjet.
I spoke w/ an Edelbrock tech today; gave him the data off of the cam card, etc. He agreed it sounded like fuel starvation. So, he's sending me a couple different rods etc to try.
In the mean time, I'm looking for a "T" arrangement so I can read fuel pressure and test fuel flow to make sure that is not the issue, AND re-check the timing.
