Stan, I always appreciate your comments! Way back in August I started a similar thread - please check it out:

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=130547

I had just been at a car show and saw a BEAUTIFUL, PRISTINE, you know, absolutely gorgeous low mileage blue LS6 convertible. When I looked at the engine, I noticed there was what appeared to me to be a 68/69 style inline fuel filter with a fuel return line (is that GF 432?). The car wasnt for sale, so I wasnt about to challenge the owner about the authenticity of his car! So, I asked the question on the forum. I am still not sure about the correct setup. The LS6 did have a holley carb. Was there a fuel return line coming off the fuel pump? Surely it didnt come stock with an inline fuel filter with a fuel return line?

Note the comments at the bottom of the thread about how easy it is to clone an LS6 !!!!

Stan, you must have looked at 3 or 400 LS6 vettes :jester What's the deal with the fuel line, pump to carb, and fuel return line?? Thanks, MJ

The LS-6 used the same fuel pump as the LS-5. Both had a vapor return line on the fuel pump.

The rusty fuel tank does not surprise me, neither does the fact that it does not have a build sheet on it. My LS-5 developed pin hole leaks in the tank and I replaced it in 1990. The build sheet was long gone and there was only a tiny amount of glue where it used to be.

This car sounds like the real deal.

MJ,

Thanks for the kind words...

I almost left the fuel line issue out of my original post as I had limited references available at that time. I knew that the LT-1s didn't use them and gathered that the LS-6 would not either. Afraid the old memory ain't what it used to be...

As you and Cam both stated, the LS-6 did indeed have a fuel return line. There should not be an external fuel filter as there were internal bronze filters used in Holley carburetor applications. The NCRS Judging Guide is also in agreement with what you posted.

I found the fuel/return line issue significant enough that I took a photo of it on a friends LS-6 that is currently being restored.

I have gone back and changed the statement in the original post to avoid any confusion by others reading the post under this topic.

Cam,

I didn't realize that rust was that big a problem in the south/southwest... I guess that I just take it for granted that rust couldn't be as big a problem as it is up here.

I also agree with you regarding the build order copy attached to the fuel tank. More often than not, the sheet is there, but sometimes they come up missing. I don't put 100% faith in them even when they are present since it is possible to get "replacements."

Like you, I think the car sounds legitimate; however, without seeing it, it is impossible to make a reasonable decision.

Regards,

Rowdy, we don't have frame rust problems but we do get water in our fuel from time to time, especially in the coastal areas like houston. The tanks then rust from the inside out.

I'll second the fuel tank rust thing. I bought a '72 this summer in Houston, and that was the first "discovery" ... 4 -5 pin holes from inside out tank rust

Glad to hear the straight poop on fuel return line ---- that was the only hitch in this investigation ( I'm glad I didn't talk to owner before I found this out) . Now for the "rest of the story" :  He says his mom was offered $70,000.00 4 years ago after the death of his father ! We've talked about this and I've relayed the info I have found as to current prices -17,500 to 60,000 , the later being a 1-2+ w/heavy documentation . This is not going to be an easy acquisition. Much "schooling" , and a couple of failed sales attempts will be needed before realistic price is obtained . On the bright side , owner likes my Cobra kit car and he is bright enough to figure out the real world value of LS6 . I'm going to relay all info I've learned w/this forum's help , and just play it slow . He is a friend , so I want what's best for him as well as me . The vette is just sitting and going backwards in condition now . I think owner knows this and would like to see it be restored(I'm not so sure he knows how much time and money is needed for this --"schooling" again) . ANYWAY   :sleep:It might well be a original LS6 and that's cool :) We'll see how it all plays out . Oh , I will get pics of stamping pad , and wil continue to urge the uncovering of paperwork . My garage is climate controled , and I've offered to "house" this vette . :seeya Geo
