Very little without a dropped base. The stock factory air cleaners have slightly dropped air cleaner bases. I purchased an offset dropped base on ebay and installed a 4" air cleaner which gives approximately 1 3/8" clearnance. I like the offset as it gives me plenty of clearance from my distributor. I'm running a Jet Performance q-jet carb.

No matter how tall the air cleaner is it will always fit below the hood.
Now if you want the hood to close thats another story.

get out your calculator. it depends on what manifold, what carb , what aircleaner make? drop base, standard? everyone says you cant fit an edelbrock rpm airgap manifold under an 81 stock hood but i did with a demon carb. they are lower profile than the edelbrock carb . 3 inch drop base cleaner on top with almost an inch clearance..

Are you talking about just changing the lid to a chrome lid or changing the whole air cleaner system?

If it's the latter it will depend on what air cleaner system are you planning to get. If everything else is stock, an air cleaner like what thegazman has should fit with a 1 inch drop base and a 3 inch tall filter.

Right now I have the dual snorkel setup though the duct work is missing. I like the cleaner look without the duct work so I was thinking of swapping to a chrome unit but I do want to close the stock hood without having any new holes made by a too tall air cleaner. Car is completely stock with original L81 and original carb.

A 14 inch diameter and 3 inches high filter will work for you.
Not sure about the 16 inch filters. I have never tried them.

This assembly should work for you: http://www.knfilters.com/search/prod...x?Prod=60-1290

I am running a unit with a filter lid similar to this: http://www.knfilters.com/search/prod...x?Prod=66-3060
(mine has chrome rings)

The K&N website has a lot of options. There are several other vendors offering similar products as well.
There are other vaccum hoses that comes off of the stock filter setup. You need to worry about what to do with those.
Good luck

You can buy the flexible ducts and a chrome air cleaner top to fit your stock air cleaner. That way you will have the original fit. It looks pretty good.
