Went out to the car and found half of my 7 quarts of oil running down the driveway. This is the Milodon oil pan installed by Beck Racing Engines....Jacked her up and found oil weeping out along the pan squared edges where it goes from vertical to horizontal....No cracks, no dings....it appears after bending the metal 90 degrees it created a weak spot...almost like a metal fuel filter....the oil is weeping out.....now this might appear stupid, but I have to ask.....are there any ways to repair this or must I purchase a new pan? Either way, I guess removing the pan is a job one before anything can be done to it. Engine is a 383 so I assume I will have to buy the same type of pan.....Any of you guys have the Milodon square bottom 7 Quart oil pan and have you experienced a simular situation? Any suggestions on an alternate oil pan for a 383? I'd hate to replace with the same brand and have this happen again. :seeya Aloha Cappy
Bionic,
First thing clean it off with any solvent, then lay under the car just to be sure and mark the leak! After that (if it was me) i would call the engine builder he should take care of it, assuming it was a new pan. You might also call Milodon they have been in business a long time and make a quality product. ....redvetracr
Drained all the oil out last night.....then wiped the area clean with brake cleaner..the metal shows no signs of cracks or dings.....I'm going to take the pan off tomorrow and see if a welding shop can repair....also will look at some other type of pans that will work on a stroked engine at the local speed shop if the welder thinks this is a basket case....what's the best type of gaskets to put back on? Are there any one piece gaskets for these engines? :seeya Aloha Cappy
If you decide to replace the pan get the Moroso xxx191 pan ( vs the xxx190). It is also a 7 qt, has kiaked out sides for good ground clearance, and comes with a windage tray, crank scraper and baffeling. Nice pan :)
Felpro now sells a one piece oil pan gasket! ( about damn time!)
Thanks for the info......Question I have now is when I pull this oil pan, will I have to jackup the engine?....If so, what all has to be done to jack it up? Or should I just have the engine pulled and take it from there?
Don't have to jack or remove engine to pull the oil pan. Remove starter and rear flywheel dust cover, remove bolts from idler arm and let it drop down, and then you should be able to remove the pan. Would also help if you have the motor stopped with #6 at TDC, if I remember correctly, but I could be wrong on that one.
john's 81 mouse,
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you,.....That's what I wanted to see....a reply with exactly what you stated....I'm a Happy Cappy Now....Drop idler arm and #6 at TDC.... :) :seeya
