Default 350 Heads

I'm going junkyard scavaging this week end. Looking for some brackets and what not. Maybe I can find a junk yard jewel. Anyway, question is, I'm going to be keeping my eye out for a good set of heads for my SB 77 vette. I currently have a set of smoggers on it. Problem is, I wouldn't know a good set of heads in a juckyard if they had a neon sign over them. Can you guys give me some pointers as to what to be looking for?

Honaker,

you would probably be better off just spending the $400 on a set of vortec heads. When you figure out the cost of buying and repairing junkyard heads, it will be pretty close to the cost of Vortecs and Vortec heads flow great. The only downside is you will need a new intake manifold.

Vortec heads require a new intake manifold, and new valve covers.
If you want a high lift cam, you need new springs too!

All this starts to come to the cost of new aftermarket heads...

I know where to get a set of 2.02 camel hump heads. $100 for the pair. But they'll need to be drilled and tapped for the accessory mounting points on the front of the heads. They have valves and springs on them, but I'm not sure what kind of shape they're in. If you're interested, e-mail me directly and I'll shoot some pics for you.

If you intend to use the car often enough, the exhaust seats will need
hardened inserts. Do these heads have them?

I'd also be interested in them if you know a little more about them.

honaker,

I have a set of 034 bow tie's. They have 2.02's, screw in studs and guide plates. They need a new set of valves. I have the old ones but they are marine valves and are to heavy for the street. If you are interested shoot me an e-mail.

A good set of head for a daily driver would be casting # 3973487 they were for the intermediate and high performance 350's. They either came with 1.94 or 2.02 valves. Another good # would be 3998997 or 3998993. These are intermediate 1.94 heads for the 350 and 400.
