Can I stick a small block 400 into a 1976 Corvette that previously held a stock engine without too many hassles/problems?
If it's a small block it should drop in just like a 350. You have to be careful of intake manifold choice for hood clearance, but there are plenty of options for raising the hood.

Also consider that the 400 is an externally balanced engine so you'll need a 400 specific flexplate for an automatic, or a balance plate for a flywheel.
Some of the 400 blocks did not have the power steering pump bracket holes drilled and tapped so if you get a 400 like that you'll have to drill it and tap them yourself.
Make sure that if you have a 400 block and 350 or after market heads that you have the steam holes drilled into the heads to match the block.
