Default speedo gear issues

The gear for the speedometer doesn't seem to contacting the output shaft on the transmission causing the speedometer needle to be either jumpy or not register at all. If I take the sending unit/ cable out of the transmission the gear seems to be in working order.

When I put it back in I get the hold down tab in the slot and tighten it down a reasonable amount. once everything is tightened down the sender seems kinda loose in the hole, and I think this is why I have the speedometer issues.

Is there any way I can fix this short of RTVing the sender into the hole?

If you take the speedo cable out of the transmission, use a drill and grab the inner braided cable and spin it up on the drill. This way, you can make sure it is not the cable that is kinked or something. If this makes the speedo turn without jumping, you can rule out the cable and gear.

With the cable out, can you get a finger up inside the tail housing and feel the driven gear on the output shaft? Try and turn it and make sure it has not come loose.

I don't think RTV will hold the cable tight in the hole opening, you might just have to replace the cable and be done with it, if all else fails.

I have tried the trick of driving the cable with a drill and everything runs smoothly. Also, worth noting, is that after I mess around with it, the speedometer runs smoothly for a short period of time (probably until it shakes loose a little bit).

Pull the gear and look at it very closely. I thought mine was fine, but was having the same issues, it would show OK with the drill and would read fine until I got to 25 mph then it would drop and then read zero. When I got a new gear and compared it the teeth were flatter and I was only getting friction contact. the new gear fixed all problems.
