I just want to inform y'all that I finally found my ideal sidepipe inserts...Hookers Max Flow! A healthy low rumble/aggressive sound...kind of sounds like a Harley (IMO) Here's what I went through to get here:
I have a 383 stroker with Hookers sidepipes - my first inserts were the Hooker reverse flow...very restrictive and sounds ok with my set-up in fact I could have been happy with them but not the sound I was looking for (sounded "slappy" and high tone)...then I put in the JCL spiral turbo baffles...holy cow!!!...great throttle response, mean sound and power...but I had to keep a look-out for cops every time I got out...way too loud for my set-up and my taste (you and your passenger would be shouting at each other)...imagine it to be perfect for the tracks and setting off every car alarm along the way...the Max Flows is the sound and performance I was looking for...low throaty and rumbles hard when I push it...that's my personal experience with sidepie mufflers I just wanted to share with you.
Now I have a pair of reverse flows and spirals to get rid off...anybody wants them so I can keep my garage clean?
That's great info ntrlhi.
You should post a sound clip. We are still in the rebuild stage yet but I am going with the hooker SS side pipes. I have been keeping on top of any side pipe thread because selecting the correct baffle seems to be a big topic. We don't want to restrict flow too much, but we don't want to attract too much attention from the local law enforcement just cruising around town. We're building the 383 for rotating source.
Just installed the Max Flows and took a 250 mile road trip with T-tops out and in: louder inside with tops in, but still able to have a consevation except when taking off in 1st gear. Also still able to set wife's car alarm off at idle, with a car parked between them.....
Everyone knows when I start-up...but running down the highway is no problem at all.
Sure hope these last for a long time as getting those side tubes off again is going to take awhile and be a royal PITA job.
Love my Max Flows too. I had a guy tell me a couple of weeks ago that it's one of the best sounding small blocks he's heard. And yes, I set off car alarms all the time too
How much did you open up the STS baffles? Mine are capped now, but I know once I do my engine upgrade, I'll have to drill them out some. I was just wondering what size hole you drilled or if you removed the caps.
redman - I didn't have to drill any holes!!!...man they were loud and close to being obnoxious...but I got thumbs up everywhere I drove...the throttle response and power is surprising and if it wasn't for the loudness I'd keep them...the max flows with the 2.5" hole are loud too believe me but not as ear piercing as the spirals...good luck

You've got sensitive ears! I think the STS sound great as they are, but I'm thinking I need to make them a little louder. At first I thought they were loud too, but the more I drive, the more I like them. You're right, I get a lot of comments on the sound. Bottomline - sidepipes are cool

Installed STS and Hookers this spring. The STS are less noisy than the dual 2.25 Flowmasters I took off with no resonance in the cabin. Windows up or down, I can talk to my passenger, talk on the phone, and hear the radio now. With the dual Flowmasters, I could not hear the passengers talk or even hear my phone ring. I love my STS baffles!
I know I had trouble finding any real sound bites on the STS when I was searching earlier this year. So thought I'd post a couple up! Pictures and soundbites are always good? Right?
Here's another....
Parked-idle about 7-800 RPM.
Ran it up to about 5000 RPM and back a few times.
The STS definately get a little louder at high RPM, but at idle and at cruise, they sound pretty mellow. The throttle response of the Hookers and STS over the 2.25 true dual is amazing. http://s298.photobucket.com/albums/m...1014085315.flv
I'd like to hear some comparative Max-flow sound clips!

Here's a clip I took. Windows down. 1st and 2nd gear. Cruising about 3000 RPM. Stock STS with no holes drilled. 350/350hp 4 speed http://s298.photobucket.com/albums/m...1014095348.flv
