I'm getting ready to start putting my new heads and intake on, and the thought of putting my old nasty cast iron thermostat housing on my new shiny aluminum Edelbrock Performer, gags me!
I need some suggestions on what type of housing I should get? About the only thing I can find locally are some rather cheesy looking Mr. Gasket housings. Does anybody have any suggestions?
Great suggestion by Paul.
See if you can get new aluminum housing from GM, then put the polishing wheel on your bench grinder and go to work. I polished my OEM housing last year and it came out looking pretty good.
I've heard many others say the Mr. Gasket chorme housing is junk, which will rust through in less than a year!
The cast iron housings may not be the prettiest (but with some silver paint, can be spiffed up), but they work. Stay away from the cheap chrome plated jobbies. They suck. The billet one's are really nice, but all things considered, are they neccessary?
been fightin with my mrgasjet one for months to get it to stop leaking just trashed it and put stock replacement one back on..no leaks mr gasket is junk.
The chrome aftermarket (i.e. MrG) work FINE as long as they're the version with the O-ring seal instead of a gasket. They don't even need any sealant. I've never had a problem with them.

I agree with Mark. I have been using this type for years with no problem. The condition of the intake's mounting surface has a lot to do with whether it leaks or not. Most aluminum intakes begin to pit and deterioate on this surface after a few years. If you use a small amount of sealer to fill in these pits, then it will seal fine with the O-ring type and gasket type.
