Ok this is going to sound strange, but what would happen if i connected a spark plug (via wire) directly to an ignition coil, connected directly to a battery, would i still need a point in there to pulse it (like a point driven by a tape player motor)
SO would the coil/ spark plug burn up with out the point there to interrupt the spark???
i am going to be using this as an igniter for a project im working on
You'll still need points, a switch is required to induce a spark in a coil. When the points (switch) are closed, the coil is building a magnetic field. When the points open, the field collapses and causes the spark thru the secondary windings in the coil. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ignition_coil

thanks for your help, i am using it to ignite a combustion chamber for a turbojet test. I can rig up a points system on a tape player motor (inside a box). I was going to use a grill igniter, but i do not think it will stand up to more than one use or so.
I'd also doubt the spark would be hot enough for that. But you never know.
How about the ignitor box from one of those kerosene heaters? Looks like a torpedo setting on a fuel tank. Those have a fan/pump that atomizes the fuel and a continuous(sp?) spark. I always though about adding a couple of fans to one of those and seeing how big a bang it'd make.

Turbojet test, eh? If you've got some electrical expertise in your crew (I'm just assuming you're not doing everything solo) you can have an oscillator circuit built up using an inexpensive timer IC and a decent power transistor, or run an ignition module off your timer IC. I built a couple circuits like this for friends that like to put spark plugs in their exhaust pipes to shoot out flames.
It shouldn't be a big deal whatever way you go, depending on what your chamber pressure is though.
