Default AFR 190cc for SBC

The guy at AFR recommended I go with 190cc heads as opposed to 195cc heads with my setup. What do you guys (the experts) recommend.
Here is my setup:
383 crank
350 block bored .030 over
Dynomax headers 1 5/8 collectors to 3 in.
Edelbrock RPM performer for Q-jet
Q-jet
Comp Cams XE 268
1.6:1 Pro-Magnum Roller Rockers
4-speed M-21
3.55 rear gears
No Nitrous or supercharger
Any suggestions contrary to the AFR guys?
Any Desktop Dyno's would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Jason

I have not had a set of 190/195 heads in my hands. The majority of c-4 guys who buy them get the complete CNC porting jobs. So they end up costing @ $2000. also they seem to step up to the 210's in 383+ ci motors. My Dart heads are @ 227 cc ported and I wished that I had gotton bigger. I was worried about streetability and went small on the cam and Dart pro1 215 cc 64 cc angle plug heads with 2.08/1.625.

So my best advice is go big now for future additional performance ideas. Also your headers are to small for any of the higher end aluminum heads. The exhaust port is bigger than your primaries.

I have a much larger cam but smaller ci than you and am running 190 AFR heads. If you go to big on the heads with the cam you will kill all low end torque which is where your cam is going to make power. I think you will like the heads and there is still room to "grow" with these heads.

Personally, I think you can go with a bigger cam on a 383 and still not lose any streetability. My Z28 uses the XE284 on a 383. I don't think it makes a lot of sense to spend that kind of money on AFR heads with an XE268 cam. My car idles around 900 with no problems nor does it sound like it's idleing too high. I'd also look for 1 3/4" primaries on the headers.

my $0.02

Oops. Just saw you were going with 1.6 rockers. Well, I'd still go with larger primaries.

If you believe the horsepower and torque numbers they are posting on their website for 383s with 190 heads, I think I would take the reps advice! :smash:
http://www.airflowresearch.com/

I'm trying to decide if I want to put a pair on my 383 or go with a BBC. The 190s would be a lot cheaper!

I just bought a pair of Sportsman II heads with 200cc runners for my 355ci.
My engine builder would put you in the 215cc range

But from what I have read the 190cc heads from AFR should be OK :D

I try to launch at around 3000 rpm and get it rolling than hit it. It has taken practice to get it right but I still sometimes bog or come out smoking. I need to get some stickier tires to get it to launch good. It really comes on stron about 3500 rpm and will pull to 7000 rpm. I usually shift at 6500. 6400 pill in the shift light so I figure by the time i react its at 6500. Need to try different shift points to see if I can better the time

STALL CONVERTER! Bite your tongue. Its a 4 speed car. M-20. Only kidding. All LT1 cars are stick cars. The auto would probably be easier to launch. If I only raced I would definitly go with an auto

Jazn74,
It does not appear you are looking for all out power I take it with the use of the Q-Jet and your cam selection.Have you though about Trick Flow 23's and saving big bucks? I do not think with this combo you will lose that much power with the TF Heads.

Thanks for all the replies. I appreciate the input
I think I am going to stick with the 190's.
Thought about the Trick Flows, but liked AFR's better. Q-Jet will work fine once properly set up, don't always need a HDP. Not really looking to get more than a little over 400hp with the car. I still want to be able to go places other than the strip.
The AFR rep did say with these heads I gain 20-30 ft lbs of torque at the low end while only sacrificing 5-6 hp at the top end. I think the trade-off is worth it, especially since torque is what rules on the street.
Again thanks.
