I'd like to install a power steering pump on my big block (for a rack and pinion setup), but the bracket and pulley prices are OUTRAGEOUS! I just priced the setup through ZIP and it will total around $300 just for the brackets, belts and alt. pulley. (I have a usable pump and P/S two groove pulley.) There's got to be a better way!
Does anybody make a serpentine setup for my application? I can't find one on March's site. I don't have A/C.
How about the new smaller aluminum pump with a remote reservoir? Anyone running one on a short water pump big block?
Re: Power steering pump and mounting options (Flareside)
Joe,
I went on and manufactured the brackets myself.
The reservoir has to be dented a little to clear a head bolt and all the other brackets for the pump can be easily manufactured of metal.
I used stainless about 3/8" thick and bent it in a vise to proper specs and alignment. Make a cardboard template first, this helps a lot.
Ended up with costs of 3 $$$ and a little elbow grease...... :D
And it even looks good!
Re: Power steering pump and mounting options (Flareside)
Hey Joe! I got that STeeroid kit as well  !!! About the PS pump install I used to have one of those saginaw style pumps and the brackets were from my earlier smallblock( modified to make them fit). Now I'm going to buy PS pump from VolksWagen Van!!! it is very small and light weight and it comes with seperate pressure tank which I'm going to hide somewhere. I'm having all the brackets and pulleys custom made from Billet aluminum so when they're done I can give you the measurements of the set(might be too late for you though as I think they'll be done by the end of February) after they are finished.
I'm not sure if you can find what you're looking for from www.zoops.com but they make all kinds of neat pulleys and brackets. :)
Re: Power steering pump and mounting options (groovyjay)
Frank, I have thought about making my own, but I'm not sure how they'd look since I don't have the machinery to mill big chunks of aluminum or steel. I'll have to eyeball it tonight...
Jay, these vendors should give us a volume discount, since we always order identical parts on the same day! Congrats.
Wow! Zoop's has EVERYTHING I need! A complete serpentine setup is $500, but I feel a lot better about that than spending $300 for the fugly steel GM brackets (although my wife may not concur:)). They even have a version for the small PS pump that Monty made reference to.
