Default harmonic balancer question 427

i'm in the process of "re-creating" a 427/390hp for my 68' coupe. i have heard conflicting opinions.......which balancer would be correct for this engine, the 7" or 8"? thanks for any assistance you may offer. rick

I have a 68 L36 Roadster. The 7 inch is correct. I had mine rebuilt at Damper Doc. I used an 8 inch temporarily. The clearance to the cross member is pretty close. And remember to get the timing cover with the welded on timing tab. I was stupid and broke mine off when I used the 8 inch...

Double check. I thought all BB's received 8 inchers.

Standard 427 got the 7" balancer. High performance engines use an 8". Same as the small blocks. A lumpier cam needs a bigger, heavier balancer in a street application. Your engine requires a 7" neutral balance balancer. I think I got one in the garage.

Interesting. I have a 350 HP 396 Camaro (69) and it has the 8 incher. This is a hydraulic cam, Q-jet engine.

My info came from Corvette By the numbers. 390 & 400 HP uses the 7" 430 & 435 HP uses the 8"
