My 74 L48 is all stock aand when you shut it off when warmed up and go to restart it, the car acts like the battery is half dead. Kind of like I all of a sudden have a high compression engine. It turns over very slowly but normally starts. I thought it was heat so I replaced the starter and added a heat shield to the starter and coated the exhaust pipe near the starter. The battery is new, the starter is new. Acts the same as when prior to changing anything.
Could it be that I didn't use the starter spacer that come with the new starter? What would happen with that makes the car hard to turn over when warm? Could the gears be binding and I need the spacer that was in the starter box? It never happens when cold, turns over great.

I agree that you should check all your grounds and battery connections. Also a new battery that has sat on a store shelf can actually be bad. Don't dismiss that as a possibility.

It could be that your timing is off. It's worth a check.
