Default Carpet installation help please

My 71 coupe did not have any carpet in the rear when I purchased it. I bought a carpet kit from Wilcox. I dry fitted the 2 large driver & passenger sections. No problems.
I fitted the rear "T" peice which will need to be trimmed by about 6".

This is where I am stuck. For the life of me I can't figure out how the 2 rear wheel well peices go in. Both the rear wheel well peices have a square cut out of the insulation on the backside of the carpet. Can anyone provide any guidance as to how the heck these two peices are supposed to fit?
What does that square uninsulated section lay against?

Thanks for any help you guys are able to provide.

I installed the complete carpet set on my 77 but it is surely different than your 71. I would suggest you ask Wilcox for assistance as they are a wealth of information, especially on the parts they sell. If you give them a call they can assist you or you can e-mail them here, they are supporting members and helped me a bunch when I was doing my interior.

Good luck and wish I had more to offer.

Yes Wilcox will know but if I had to guess without seeing the cutouts they would be for the shoulder harness units.
One word of advice dont cut anything OUT until your absolutely certain it has to be removed.I always just slice, that way if its a mistake it will lay right back down.

I'd be curious as to how you make out with yours since I'm having the exact same problems, purchased with the same vendor. After close to 2 years trying to make it fit, I gave up. Believe me when I say I've tried every possible method and took everyone's advice.

I installed all the carpet in my 71 coupe. It takes some time but it isn't that hard.
1. Do the side pieces first. Don't forget to replace the drain tubes and the metal piece in the wheel well where it drains. I did not cut any holes for the seat belt retractors--just cut small X's big enough to put the bolts through. I did have to trim the front and rear of the piece but only did that alittle at a time and as I went. I DID NOT use any glue except on the piece behind the seats on the vertical surface. That way if I ever want to remove it no problem. You should have two pieces of semi-hard rubber that molds to the sides of the rear compartment and holds the front trim piece (just behind the seats) awat from the sides of the car. The carpet doesn't lay perfectly flat and has some lumps and bumps in it--that's normal.
2. Once you have the two side pieces in place install the rear T-piece using the rubber grommets (remove the rear window holder first) but make sure you mark the screw holes---I used large long nails that I pushed through the carpet into the holes--I also did this on the floor to mark the bolt holes for replacing the seat rails.
3. Fit around the 3 compartments which fit in the back--this should be removed. When I went to replace it I had to cut some more carpet because I let it too long----JUST remember better to leave it long and cut some more than to cut too much. Measure twice and cut once...

Don't be afraid to put all the pieces in and then remove them and readjust---remember if you use no glue---which I didn't this makes it easy.

To do the entire interior took me about 2 weeks working a couple hours a night--I went slow and got it right the first time.

Let me know if you need some pictures of the carpet in different areas.

Derby98,

Email me your email address and I'll send you a picture as soon as I can. I think I have a picture on file, if not I'll have someone run out to the shop and snap some for you. There is a 70 and a 72 coupe in the shop to take a picture of to send you.

Send the address to Willcoxcustomerservice@willcoxcorvette.c om

I can't find a picture of the rear carpet to help this customer. The cars in the shop were finished and delivered before I could get a picture. Anyone out there have one?

Wallifisrmn is dead on for installation of these items, but I wanted to send you a picture of them installed.

I'm going to pick some used parts for a 68-72 tomorrow and I think this customer had a new carpet installed in his car. I'll take my camera, it's a 69 but it shoudl give you a good idea how to lay the two outer sections.

You want to put these in first then do the center T. I know that Fitting these four sections of carpet can be a pain. I own a 70 conv, but the carpet in it would be different.

These are pictures of mine, I was so unhappy with the fit that I eventually gave up. It's still in the same condition.

Thanks Man. I figured it out early this morning. The fit is kinda crappy as many have already stated. Luckily my interior is black so the bumps & humps are not as evident back there.
Thank you for taking the time to post the pics.
